I am going to beat this one to death, but setting up your sag is the most important adjustment to your suspension you can make. If you want to get out there and Murder Some Dirt... you need to get this right, otherwise you might find the trail trying to murder you!
How do you measure sag???
Depending on your shock or fork manufacture, air or coil, it can be fairly easy or sometimes a pain in the ass. But, even if it is, do not skip setting it up right. The benefit once you have it setup right is that is it easy to repeat, or make the smallest of adjustments to fine tune the ride.
Why is doing all of this so Important?????
First off... every other adjustment after setting the air pressure or spring pressure is useless unless the sag has been set-up properly. Too little air pressure and the rebound may never be quick enough, or you will have insufficient pressure to let the compression circuit do its job properly. More importantly, on a fork you may be diving through your travel or have a mid stroke support that does nothing to help you in the berms of under heavy braking. On the rear, you will be constantly in the wrong spot in the suspensions kinematics curve and never be using intentions or potential of the rear suspensions curve.
It could screw up your bottom out resistance, mess with your pedal platform or small bump sensitivity or let your rear end drop in corners and cause pedals strikes you need not have to experience.
SAG.. is so damn important!
Once you have the sag setup it is then easy to duplicate it before each ride. On an air fork/shock you should be checking and resetting the pressure before every ride. Check your tires, check your air cans and get it all set right.. EVERY RIDE!!!!
After that it is all minor pressure changes, but more importantly it will effectively allow you to setup the rebound and compression circuits, or even the volume spacers to fine tune the bike for your riding style, or the terrain you are Stalking that day!
Have fun... and go Murder Some Dirt!
